When Job Search Advice Doesnt Work For You

When Job Search Advice Doesnt Work For You In March 2018 I wrote this post about a JibberJobber user who was having problems with their job search. She had a great question my advice is in the bottom half of the blog post and can be summarized in these three points: Think critically about the advice you get, and figure out how and what to apply to your situation Dont go it alone Do something else, which can help with networking and create opportunities for other income streams Go read the original post. I am reminded of a time I was in San Francisco at an outplacement company speaking to their candidates. During my presentation a guy yelled out from the back Ive already done all that stuff, and it doesnt work! Go back to my three points above. Each of them are equally important, but your implementation might look different than someone elses. Good luck! Casual to Formal in Minutes A Quick Style Guide for College Students -

Casual to Formal in Minutes A Quick Style Guide for College Students - You were probably told that college would be fun. What you werent told was that college life would be demanding and hectic. Juggling friends, assignments, sororities or fraternities, dates, sports and what not requires more than 100% of your efforts. As a student, you’ll have quite a few formal events to attend too. Probably it’s a sorority night out, a dinner celebrating your college’s win at a championship, or a formal date. You need to set your priorities in order and work accordingly. Managing time effectively is a necessity and can turn into a boon if you learn the art well. It will help students to have their dorm rooms organized in a way that helps them find things they need quickly. Deciding what you want to wear to classes the next day and laying those clothes out before you go to bed will save time in the morning. Accessory hangers for jewelry will help girls find matching pieces easily. Heres a quick style guide that will help both guys and girls get ready in minutes for an important event that is right after class. For Guys You probably go to class unshaven and in a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. If you take a bath, you earn brownie points. If not, that’s your first step to getting ready for a formal event. Remember that no amount of perfume or deodorant can save you from stinking if you haven’t bathed in days. Spraying on perfume only makes your body odor smell worse than it already is. Shaving is an absolute must too, unless you are growing a beard. But that doesn’t give you the license to look homeless. Trim and define your beard or moustache as necessary. Don’t forget to use after shave lotion. It will make you feel fresh and smell good too. Guys need to exfoliate and moisturize too. So wash your face well. You don’t want to go to the event with oily skin. Dry and flaky skin doesn’t look good on anyone. So use a moisturizer that is appropriate for you. Of course, you need to stock up on these things well in advance so you’re ready whenever the situation calls. Getting a haircut should be a part of your routine. If you haven’t had the time, you’ll just have to make the best of your hair. If you have to really hurry, forget shampooing. Use styling gels, hair creams or whatever you prefer to give yourself a sleek hairdo. This applies if you normally don’t care about what your hair looks like. If going in semi-formal attire is okay, you don’t have to ditch the jeans. Just get into a nice looking blazer. Sandals won’t fit the occasion. You must wear a pair of decent shoes. The discounted mens nike air max shoes would be a good choice for students. If they need polishing but you don’t have the time, clean the shoes with a cloth dipped in a solution of mild soap and warm water. For Girls For girls too, it goes without saying that body odor can only be eliminated by taking a shower. If you don’t have the time to shampoo, use a dry shampoo or just use conditioner. Using a micro-fiber towel to dry your hair will save you lots of time. If there’s nothing you can do for your hair, don’t leave it untied. Braids and buns are welcome at formal events. The quickest thing you can do is get your hair up in a top knot. If it looks messy, don’t worry; it will work. If you can spend a couple of minutes, you can go for a fancy low chignon or a fish-tail braid or a Dutch braid. Clean and moisturize your skin well. It will help if you use products that can solve multiple issues. For example, use a shampoo with conditioner so that you don’t have to spend extra time to condition hair. You’ll find such products for your skin too. Instead of applying moisturizer and then using concealer, use a product that does both things- a tinted moisturizer. Use a concealer only where you need to hide flaws. The quickest thing you can do is use two coats of mascara, a stroke of eye liner, and red lipstick. Though minimal, you will achieve a fabulous look with these three essentials. If you can put in a little more effort, use your ring finger and dab some lipstick on your eyelids and cheek bones. Smudge well and use the same color on your lips. A monochromatic look is sure to get you attention. If you go to classes in casual dresses, you can easily convert one into a dress fit for formal occasions. Just pull on a lace or an embroidered shrug. A dinner jacket will also do the trick. A shawl or scarf can be used too. A statement necklace or a ring will add class to your outfit. Put aside your satchel or oversized bag and opt for a studded clutch or one in a bold color. Never make the mistake of taking something with straps to a formal event. Step out of the flip flops and slip into a pair of heels. Pantyhose will also add sophistication to your look. If you don’t want to wear heels, slip into ballet flats or strappy wedges. Use shoe clips to instantly add life to otherwise dull shoes. Conclusion With a little forethought, you will be able to handle things well. Being prepared is the key to making things work when you are hard-pressed for time. No matter how bad the situation, you must never show up at any formal event ill-groomed or wearing shabby clothes. Don’t forget to spray on some perfume. Make sure you don’t use too much of it though. And of course, enjoy yourself! College life will be over in the blink of an eye. Don’t let the pressure reach your head. Building A Meaningful Legacy - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Building A Meaningful Legacy - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What will your footprint look like? Building an Inspired Business is the usual topic of my entries based upon helping communities at large as well as helping those following in your footsteps. But today’s article is a tribute to a relative by marriage who managed to immigrate to the United States and leave a wonderful mark on everyone he encountered. His life was truly inspiring. This is another instance where business models life. The remembrances of our deceased relative were equally inspiring. As a young man, “Greg” left Morocco to come to the United States with an entrepreneurial mindset in tact. Getting acclimated, Greg took a job as a French teacher at a high school located in a poor neighborhood. He gave his all to his students and they rewarded Greg by remaining in touch with him for years, and some, for a lifetime. After getting married and having children of his own, Greg coached his children and their teammates to victory in a variety of sports. Swimming was one such sport. So upon accumulating enough money, Greg purchased a swim school whereupon he delighted in hiring instructors to teach many children how to swim. But Greg’s real passion was going to flea markets. He eventually opened an antique store. He didn’t necessarily make a lot of money in this endeavor but it was his passion and he spoke passionately with his clientele. They loved coming and exchanging notes on the collectibles. The financial reward came in the increased value of the property. The only thing missing from Greg’s life was his love for his country’s old-style Temple. So with a few buddies, he created a Moroccan Temple in Los Angeles. When the Temple was built, the people came, and the community developed. The community became a second family for sharing, learning, and supporting one another through the years. No matter how tough times got, there were always people with whom to find comfort. It was these same people who flocked to the funeral to provide glowing testimonials for the good they found in Greg’s heart. Hundreds appeared to pay homage to the man who gave them hope, encouragement and shared lessons learned along the way. The final touch was the beautifully written letter Greg’s wife, of 46 years, wrote of both the struggles to make it and the fine times they enjoyed together with their children. It was unusual and a wonderful testimonial. Undoubtedly this was the most moving funeral I ever attended. Normally funerals are sad with little to be said but not in this case. What was most moving was the legacy and the footprint Greg left for all those with whom he came into contact over the years. The day Greg was laid to rest, the testimonials poured forth, and his heart-based personal brand received much praise. As business mirrors life, had Greg lived on, he would have received many more testimonials and referrals for all that he wished to accomplish. Resume Goal Statements

Resume Goal StatementsWork goal statements, job description goals and prospect goal statements are some of the common resume goal statements that most people write in their job profiles. But it is important to understand that each one has its own importance and purpose. Let us look at some of the best ways in which you can improve the quality of your statements.Job goal statements are basically a summary of your interests and ambitions for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, career objective statements can be used to state your core values and provide a brief overview of the areas where you have an interest and a yearning for a new direction. Prospect goal statements, on the other hand, are less detailed and should be focused on a particular topic or a specific area of focus. It is always best to emphasize the most important aspect of your objective. One of the best ways to improve the quality of your resume goal statements is to ensure that you do not put too much emphasis on one aspect or other. When writing these types of statements, do not over-inflate what you want from the work. If you try to state all your desires in a single sentence, it may seem as if you are speaking too much and people will lose interest in your statements.Ensure that your first sentence is as concise as possible. Use short sentences that do not contain unnecessary details and try to use 'I' statements, instead of 'we' statements. This is important because it demonstrates to the reader that you are addressing yourself in your statement. By using 'I', you are asserting yourself as the person behind the statement and this will help you achieve your objective.Consider what the best first point that people will read in your resume is. Usually the first sentence is what most people will check out before looking into the rest of the information. It is advisable to include a beginning of your career objective statement and a beginning of your career goal statement. The last thing to co nsider is to emphasize your career objective statement with examples from your own experience. When you include past experiences, it helps the reader understand what you want for them in the future. An example would be, 'My goal is to establish myself as a reliable source of qualified, reliable business leads'. Remember, it is better to have examples than just something vague that might sound like empty promises.People are generally more interested in seeing examples of your achievements rather than something that sounds unrealistic. You should put your skills and talents at the forefront of your statements. Remember, your goal should not be to exaggerate. It should be something you believe in and should have strong evidence to support it.When writing your resume goal statements, make sure that you put the most important points at the front and emphasize them to the readers. Always try to stress the areas where you feel you will excel in.

The Pie Chart to Craft Your Ideal Job

The Pie Chart to Craft Your Ideal Job Some of my clients tell me they are pretty satisfied in their careers. Something might be missing, but overall they feel okay about their current job. In most of these cases, my clients arent doing exactly what they thought they would be doing on a day-to-day basis. Does this sound like you? While your job has a specific list of responsibilities attached to it, you may find yourself doing more of the ones you dont care for and less of the responsibilities that you enjoy. For example, as a career coach, some of my colleagues enjoy researching current employment data, while others love the writing aspect. Some career coaches enjoy the 1:1 coaching and others enjoy educating a larger group of individuals via a workshop or conference. All of those may be responsibilities of a career coaching position but every career coach will enjoy some more than others. If you fall into the my-job-is-okay category, consider doing the following exercise: draw a circle on a piece of paper and create different sections of your pie to represent your responsibilities. For example, if you spend 40% of your day doing research, make your slice about 40% of the pie. If you spend 20% of your day solving customer issues, then make that piece a 20% slice, and so on. This is your Job Pie. Once you have filled in 100% of your Job Pie, detailing out all of your current responsibilities, draw another empty circle below it. Now create an ideal Job Pie. Given the same responsibilities, what would this job look like ideally? Using the example from above, would the research slice be so big? How much would take from one slice and give to others? Once you complete the ideal Job Pie, compare the two. Where are the big differences? Now consider discussing this with your manager. Is there a way to adjust those slices so that it is closer to the ideal? Perhaps there is another employee in the same role as you who would rather take on more research? There may be some short-term fixes that can improve the distribution of your work activities. Of course, the reality may be that changes are long-term. However, by asking the question, you are actively managing your career. You are working to get your job to a place where it is satisfying for you and meets the needs of your employer.

Sarah Palin Teaches Job Seekers Not to Throw in the Towel -

Sarah Palin Teaches Job Seekers Not to Throw in the Towel - I dont believe that its a good idea to inject politics into the workplace. Inevitably, people will disagree, and some will feel its necessary to convert people to their right way of thinking. In any case, its a can of worms, a Pandoras box once opened, it cant be contained again. So, I dont choose political sides on my blog. However, Ive been a bit of a political junkie since I was a kid. Somehow, I cant get enough of the talk shows and articles and blogs about the ins and outs of the presidential election. I cant help but be inspired to write a post about John McCains choice of Sarah Palin for his VP spot. Two angles that interest me as a blogger writing about career issues: Governor Palins relative inexperience. The blog that some credit for raising her profile. Experience in the Job Hunt No matter what your political bent, you are probably surprised that McCain chose someone from such a small state, who, on paper, has less experience than any VP pick in modern history (per the Huffington Post). What does this mean for job seekers? I think it means you never know! On one hand, I just blogged about the risks of taking a job that is beyond your experience. On the other hand, maybe Palins accomplishments and specific skills (including the less quantifiable soft skills) make her very well qualified to balance a ticket with McCain. Sometimes, the right person for the job may not be as obvious as it seems. The lesson? Maybe there is a promotion at your organization that youd like to shoot for, but you figure another candidate is a shoo-in. Dont throw in the towel! Think about what you can do to stand out. What makes you just right for the job? Think outside of the box, focus on all of your skills and contributions and make sure the decision makers know what you have to offer. Which brings us to point #2: Some Credit Blogger for VP Pick Adam Brickley, a 21-year old college student apparently has been blogging in an effort to win Sarah Palin a spot on the Republican ticket since last year. The power of social media? Perhaps! Just as you dont really know what the tipping point is that causes an organization to choose one qualified candidate over another, seemingly equally qualified candidate, well never really know how much influence (or not) this blog had. Brickley did report that he received a call from the Palins after McCains official announcement. The lesson for job seekers here? You never know what can tip the scales. While Brickleys blog may have had little influence, it is safe to say that his impact was more than just blowing into the wind. I often tell job seekers that blogging can be good for their careers. For a strong writer, starting a blog is a great way to demonstrate expertise in an area. With employers Googling applicants, blogging is one way to help control your digital footprint (what people find when they search for your name). If you blog, you directly impact what comes up, which is especially useful if you arent happy with current search results. Only time will tell how Governor Palin will fare in the VP race, but no matter what the outcome, dont ignore the lessons for your own career or job hunt!
